Despite the name, allspice is a single dried berry, and it earned the name because it tastes like clove, cinnamon and nutmeg rolled into one. It is essential in Jamaican jerk seasoning, and just as at home in a pumpkin pie, a pot of chili or a jar of pickled beets.

Bring a clean jar or use one of our bags, weigh it empty at the till, scoop what you need and pay by weight. Use a pinch in baking and spice cakes, rub it on pork or chicken, or add it to mulled cider. Store sealed and away from light, and buy in small amounts so it stays fragrant.
