Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid. The body does not build it into proteins; instead it sits free in most tissues, especially in the heart and nervous system. It helps stabilise cell membranes in electrically active tissue, helps generate and regulate nerve impulses, and supports the maintenance of normal fluid balance. It is also used in visual pathways and in the brain, where it works alongside glycine and GABA.

NOW's version is free-form taurine at 500 mg per capsule, with rice flour and a vegetarian hypromellose capsule and nothing else. It is usually taken between meals with water or juice.
