Black spruce (Picea mariana) is a spruce tree species in the pine family. A symbol of North America’s Boreal Forest, black spruce is common to Canada, the Northern U.S. and Alaska. It is particularly adapted to significant climate variations characterized by low average annual temperatures and major temperature fluctuations. In Canada, it is primarily used by the pulp and paper industry for its solid, straight and lightweight wood, long used as carpentry wood. Spruce resin is harvested to make ginger beer, a beverage dating back to the colonization of New-France. Spruce -Black essential oil is used in aromatherapy as a nerve tonic and to help relieve joint and muscle pain associated with sprains, strains and rheumatoid arthritis.
