The leaves are aged in barrels for months before distillation to lose their bitterness, and the result is a rich, earthy, woody scent that perfumers prize as a base note in woody and oriental fragrances.

In aromatherapy it is used for its calming, grounding scent. It bridges floral and herbaceous oils in a blend, so try it with lavender, bergamot or geranium in the diffuser. Add a few drops to sweet almond oil for a nourishing oil for dry skin. Patchouli is potent, so a little goes a long way.
